An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale hit central Greece on Wednesday noon, the Geodynamic Institute of the Athens National Observatory announced. No injuries or material damage have been reported, authorities said.
Greek experts speaking to Xinhua revised downwards an earlier estimate by the Euro Mediterranean Seismic Institute which had measured the quake at 5.3 on the Richter scale.
The Greek Geodynamic Institute confirmed the epicenter is located near the town of Amfiklia, some 120 kilometers north western of Athens. The depth was measured at approximately 20 kilometers by the Greek seismologists.
The tremor was felt across central Greece to the Greek capital and was followed by several aftershocks.
Tremor was felt across central Greece, including the Greek capital Athens, where witnesses said they felt building shaking for several seconds.
The Euro Mediterranean Seismic Institute's director Constantinos Makropoulos and Professor Athanasios Ganas stressed that there is no cause of major concern, since the zone is seismic prone and earthquakes of 5-5.5 on the Richter scale are expected.
