Four people were stabbed to death and another 11 were injured in a commuter bus attack on Sunday night in Chengdu, Southwest China's Sichuan Province, according to local police.

The incident is the latest in a number of stabbings that have occurred on buses, which is now becoming a safety concern for the general public nationwide.

The suspect, surnamed Li, 41, was caught after attacking dozens of people on a bus, Chengdu public security bureau said on its official Sina Weibo Monday.

The injured are currently being treated at a local hospital.

The police said that Li, from elsewhere in the province, had a dispute with his family over financial issues and left home to make money.

An official, surnamed Xie, with the publicity department of the city's police, told the Global Times that the case is still under investigation, refusing to give more details about the possible motive of the suspect.

Li arrived in Chengdu at noon and at around 9 pm he began stabbing passengers on a Route 42 bus after it left the station, according to the local police.

The bus driver stopped the bus and evacuated the passengers.

Li then got off the bus and began to chase passersby.

Witnesses said that the bus driver was chasing the suspect with a mop in his hand, while passersby confronted him with benches.

The suspect was captured after police officers opened fire and hit him in his right leg.

Yang Zhucheng, a security guard at a nearby residential community, witnessed that the knife the suspect carried was about 10 to 20 centimeters long. He saw the suspect chasing a woman who had bloodstains on her clothes.

One of the dead is a woman surnamed Zhao. She was stabbed in the chest while she was having a walk after dinner, according to one of her relatives.

The case came after several bus-related crimes across the country, which have triggered widespread concern among the public.

In one case, a man stabbed two children and an 18-year-old boy to death and injured another 12 on a commuter bus in Anyang, Henan Province on August 19.

While they are seen as isolated incidents, they could cause great harm to society as they have increased the sense of insecurity among the public, Mao Lixin, a lawyer with the Shangquan Law Firm, told the Global Times.

"It's difficult to prevent such cases from happening in a short term as they mirror the deep-rooted problems of society like social injustice and widening gap in income," he added.
