Germany has no plans to join military actions against Syria, a government spokesman said Friday.

"We haven't considered any German military participation and still aren't doing so," government spokesman Steffen Seibert said Friday.

Seibert said Chancellor Angela Merkel and US President Barack Obama agreed during their phone call on Thursday to continue close coordination on a possible international reaction to the alleged chemical attacks in Syria.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle also told local media on Friday that Germany will not be in a military strike against the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad and the country had not been asked to participate in such an action.

"Such participation is neither been asked nor is it being considered by us, " Westerwelle told Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung newspaper. "We urge the United Nations Security Council to find a common stance and that the work of the UN inspectors will be completed as quickly as possible."

The German leadership has been stressing that it hopes to see a comprehensive political solution to the conflict in Syria, and polls indicate that most German people oppose military action by the Western countries in Syria.
