Moscow will stop its "special" trade relations with Kiev if the latter joins the European Union (EU) free trade zone, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Friday.
"They (Ukrainians) always ask us for loans. At the end of all, if they have such advanced relations with the EU, let them take credits in Brussels," Medvedev said in an interview published at the government website.
He added that this would be "an absolutely normal practice with no jealousy involved," and the Russia-EU trade turnover of 400 billion US dollars has been times higher than that of Ukraine-EU.
"No offense, but we must understand and calculate," Medvedev said.
The prime minister warned that Kiev cannot hope to maintain its economic association with the EU while Russia would keep its economic relations with Ukraine at the current level.
"Now we've got special, exclusive relations, based on many concessions, benefits used in importing their goods to the Russian market," he reminded.
Medvedev added that Moscow did not coerce Kiev to join the Russia-led Customs Union with Belarus and Kazakhstan, but Ukraine must make a choice.
Ukraine plans to sign political-economic agreements with the EU during the Eastern Partnership Summit due in Lithuania's Vilnius on Nov. 28-29.
