The US nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USGeorge Washington sailed into Hong Kong waters Friday morning for a routine port visit to the city.
The George Washington Strike Group, which consists of the Nimitz-class supercarrier and its four escort ships, will stay in Hong Kong for about five days.
Rear Admiral Mark Montgomery, the strike group's commander, said during a press briefing that military to military events are an important part of building a comprehensive, respectable partnership between the United States and China.
According to him, this port visit is an example that this kind of engagement, where senior leaders in the strike group meet with Chinese PLA garrison commander counterparts and have discussions that build partnership, enhance trust and increase transparency between both sides.
During its stay, the aircraft carrier's 5,500 sailors will also have the opportunity to enjoy the city's culture and cuisine.
"I'm excited to visit Hong Kong; this is my first time," said Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handling) Airman Chanah Turis. "I really want to see the city from the top of Victoria's Peak, do some shopping and try the local cuisine."
The strike group's command religious ministries department has also organized 16 community relations projects that allow crew members to interact with local residents, according to Lt. Cmdr. James Stockman, public affairs officer of the ship.
The 333-meter, 97,000-ton USGeorge Washington has approximately 70 aircraft on board. Commissioned in 1992, it is named after the first president of the United States. In 2008, it became a forward-deployed carrier at Yokosuka Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan.
