China's e-commerce giant, Tmall, saw 25 million orders totaling about 6.7 billion yuan, or $1.1 billion, on the first hour of November 11, or Double 11, a major online shopping day in China that coincides with Singles' day.

Just 33 minutes into Double 11, China's biggest android-based mobile manufacturer, Xiaomi, saw over 100 thousand yuan in sales.

Total sales on Double 11 are expected to exceed 30 billion yuan, equal to Walmart China's total sales in the first half of 2012.

During Double 11 last year, 45 percent of shoppers complained that internet speeds across China were going at a snail's pace, making it difficult to view items and confirm bill payment, according to a survey conducted by China e-Business Research Center.

To accommodate this year's consumers, the Alibaba Group, owner of Tmall, has doubled its website capacity, said Liu Zhenfei, Vice CEO of the Group's technical department.
