Afghan police backed by units of the national army have killed five Taliban militants during series of operations across the country over the past 24 hours, Interior Ministry said in a statement released here on Monday.

During the operations, conducted in Nangarhar, Baghlan, Uruzgan, Logar and Helmand provinces, the troops also seized a number of arms and ammunitions from the insurgents.

Taliban militants fighting the government have vowed to speed up activities against Afghan and NATO-led troops stationed in Afghanistan.
