Japan and Brunei leaders on Friday agreed to enhance bilateral cooperation in fields like energy, economy and defense ahead of a special summit between Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

After a meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Bruneian Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah here, Abe told a joint press conference that the two countries agreed to further their cooperation at the time of their 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties in 2014.

Japan, the host of the special summit commemorating 40th anniversary of ties with ASEAN, and Brunei, the chair of ASEAN for this year, also agreed to work closely for the success of the summit, which will be kicked off later Friday.

Bruneian Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, for his part, said his country is satisfied with the energy relations with Japan, saying bilateral relations are "long-standing".

Brunei exports liquefied natural gas to Japan, while Japan offers to provide technological assistance in the areas of renewable energy and energy conservation to the Southeast Asian country.
