Russian freestyle skier Maria Komissarova was seriously injured in a crash during training on Saturday and has been ruled out of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

The 23-year-old Komissarova was hurt in a crash in the first ski cross training session at Rosa Khutor Extreme Park and was immediately taken to hospital for surgery.

According to the Russian Freestyle Federation, Komisssarova would not compete at the women's freestyle cross at the Olympics.

"According to information received from the chief doctor of the federation, Maria has a serious injury. She was immediately transported from the PSX stadium to the No. 8 Hospital in Krasnaya Polyana. Doctors conducted necessary examinations and decided to operate on the athlete immediately," the federation said in a statement.

Komissarova, who is 33rd in the 2013-14 World Cup standings, had recovered from a serious leg injury sustained early last year to qualify for the Games. Russia News Agency Interfax says the federation confirmed Komissarova is likely to have suffered a serious spinal injury.
