China's men's curling team claimed their sixth win of the round-robin to as good as guarantee their semifinal places after the afternoon session on the sixth day at the Ice Cube Curling Center on Saturday.
China currently ranked first with world champion Sweden with six wins and one loss.
Every team with six round-robin wins has previously made the Olympic Winter Games last four.
China's sixth victory came with a 9-6 win over Russia. China managed an early lead 5-3 after the fifth end and took the control of the game to seal the win.
"We're not thinking about that. Right now the target is to play our best in the next game," said China's second Ba Dexin, who are competing his first Winter Olympics.
"I am having fun. I'm just enjoying the Games and pushing myself as best I can."
Sweden took its number of wins to six with an 8-4 victory over Germany. In the session's closest match-up, Canada beat Britain 7-5 and drew level with its beaten opponent in the competition standings with a 5-2 win/loss record. Denmark's slim semifinal chances ended with its fifth round-robin defeat, 9-3, by Switzerland.
Chinese women's team, bronze medalist of Vancouver 2010, beat defending champion Sweden 7-6 earlier Saturday before losing to Denmark 6-9.
Denmark set up victory in the ninth end when skip Lene Nielsen produced a perfect runback takeout to remove a China stone and score three points for an 8-6 lead with one end to play. Nielsen also needed a nerveless draw to the button against two China stones in the final end to force Wang Bingyu into a tricky hit and roll shot with her last stone. It failed.
"We wasted a lot of chances," said Li Dongyan, team leader of the Chinese team. "The girls were on in the best form."
Canada's women's team became curling's first Sochi 2014 semifinalist after taking two wins Saturday. They beat Japan 8-6 before defeating Russia 5-3.
In other women's matches, Britain edged South Korea 10-8 and lost to Switzerland 6-8; the United States lost to Sweden 6-7.
The Chinese men's team will meet Canada Sunday and they will make the semis with one more win.
