The UN Security Council on Sunday issued a statement to the press describing the slaughter at a railway station in Kunming, capital of Southwest China's Yunnan Province as the "most heinous terrorist attack" and stressing the need to bring the perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of this terrorist attack to justice.
CNN has tiptoed around the Kunming attack by putting quotation marks around the word terrorists. Its long-claimed neutrality hinted at its partiality to terrorists. The bold statement embarrasses CNN.
After the
Kunming terrorist attack, a few Western media outlets, such as CNN, pointed their fingers at the Chinese government. It is more than obvious that the latest incident is a terrorist attack and there is no room for their double standards. CNN is messing with political ideologies and has crossed the bottom line of media ethics.
The editors and reporters of CNN may believe that their way of reporting is objective and neutral. Every terrorist group in the world has its hatred whose story can elicit sympathy. But terrorists are terrorists. This is a matter of common values. If the Chinese media had used quotation marks for terrorists after the 9/11 attacks, how would American society feel? Should the mainstream Chinese media do so when another terrorist attack hits the US?
CNN has tainted Western values. Chinese society holds a favorable impression toward the US. Many Chinese prefer to believe that the US is sincere in talking with China about human rights. But CNN, as a leading Western media company, always shows sympathy toward China's terrorists rather than the victims.
If it had happened in the past, the Chinese public may have demanded an apology from the Western media company that is the most hostile to China. But now we are not bothered to do so. The international community has a clear definition of the Kunming attack. CNN is more like a clown and its noble reputation has already been ruined.
We still care about the official attitude of major Western powers. As for CNN, it represents the mentality of a part of American society, which takes pleasure in the Chinese people's misfortune. After the 9/11 attacks, some Chinese did the same privately, but the Chinese media kept their professional responsibilities. What CNN did is like chuckling at someone's funeral.
There is no need for the Chinese government to punish CNN, as some people have requested. That's what it is supposed to be. The Western community still thinks it can insult China at will. Only when China further develops and wins more rights in the world will Western mainstream media consider China's feelings.
The statement of the UN Security Council is accurate and timely. The Chinese government should let these authoritative international voices side with us, and CNN will end up being put to the side.
