Hosts Russia on Sunday continued to lead the medal count after they made a clean sweep in the men's 15-kilometer sitting cross-country skiing at the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.

Roman Petushkov, already gold medalist from Saturday's 7.5-kilometer sitting biathlon, won the cross-country trek on a time of 40 minutes 51.6 seconds. He was chased home by compatriots Irek Zaripov and Aleksandr Davidovich on times of 41:55.1 and 42:08.6.

Japan's Akira Kano also hit his second gold medal in Sochi as he won the men's sitting super-G on Sunday, with a time of one minute 19.51 seconds.

The Japanese won the sitting downhill on Saturday for his first gold in the Russian city.

Russia now tops the medal table with five gold, seven silver and five bronze medals. Ukraine, Japan, Austria, Slovakia and Germany each got two golds while France and Spain got one each.

In the day's women's 12-kilometer sitting cross-country skiing, the 2014 paralympics saw a protest against the event winner. The protest was lodged by the second-placed American, but the protest did not affect the final decision.

Ukrainian Lyudmyla Pavlenko won the event with a timing of 38:54.3 while American Oksana Masters came second on 39:16.0.

2006 Winter Paralympics champions Canada stretched their winning streak on Sunday by beating Norway with four unanswered goals.

2010 Winter Paralympics champions the United States are scheduled to play South Korea later in the day.

For Russian goalie Mikhail Ivanov, his ambition might be scoring up front instead of tending the net at the back.

But his performance at the 2013 World Championship more than secured him the position of goaltender for the hosts who, however, lost their opener at the Sochi Paralympics to South Korea through games-won-on shots shootout after regulation and overtime plays late on Saturday.

"I was put in the net and I am still playing there," said heavily-built Mikhail Ivanov. "I'm trying things out. They don't let me. I asked to come out in the field but they told me 'you're good in the net'."

His ambition would not be materialized in Sochi because he blocked 55 pucks for a 96-percent save percentage at the 2013 worlds and was chosen for the best goalie of the championship.Russia plays Italy later on Sunday.

In total, 72 gold medals are on offer in alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, biathlon, wheelchair curling, ice sledge hockey and snowboard in Sochi.
