UN agencies launch common development assistance strategy for Kenya

The UN agencies based in Kenya on Monday launched a collective strategy to channel development assistance to the east African nation.

Resident Coordinator of the UN Systems in Kenya, Nardos Bekele- Thomas Senior told a media briefing in Nairobi that the agencies have agreed on a common approach to deliver assistance to a range of development programs in Kenya.

"The UN agencies will coordinate delivery of assistance towards programs that would enable Kenya achieve vision 2013 goals. We have agreed on a collective approach to fund projects that have a transformative effect on the lives of ordinary citizens," Bekele- Thomas said.

The east African nation hosts 20 UN agencies that have invested heavily in a range of strategic areas including food security, health, education, governance and peace building.

Under this arrangement, the UN agencies, donors and the government of Kenya will partner to help realize national development goals in a four year timeline.

Thomas revealed that the UN system in Kenya will mobilise 2.6 billion US dollars to achieve the 13 outcomes identified under the UN Development Assistance Framework.

"This program support Kenya's aspirations to be a middle income economy by 2030.It will strengthen dialogue with key stakeholders to accelerate socioeconomic transformation in the country," Thomas told journalists.
