A most wanted serial killer terrorizing residents of southwest Nigeria's Ogun State has been arrested and put in custody of security agents, local police authorities said at a news conference Wednesday.

State police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi said the unnamed suspect was caught at Iyana Egbado, a community in Ewekero local government area of the southern state on Wednesday morning.

According to him, the suspect was caught with pieces of "human flesh."

Adejobi told reporters at the news conference held in Abeokuta, the state capital, that residents of the community alerted the police which immediately swung into action. He said investigation had commenced, particularly to determine through a forensic test that the pieces of meat were human parts.

"The statement from the suspect is not coherent as he is behaving in an abnormal manner, but thorough investigation will be carried out to discover the truth of the case," said the police officer.

The loud cry of a female victim alerted residents of the suspect's activities shortly before his apprehension by police, according to Samuel Oladele, a resident who witnessed the arrest. He said the suspect was discovered to be operating a den inside a nearby bush.

Residents, who became suspicious of the suspect's activities, were forced to open a polythene bag found on him and discovered pieces of meat believed to be human parts, added the eyewitness.

"The timely intervention of the police prevented people from killing him," Oladele said.

The suspect would be charged to court soon, following investigation into his criminal activities, said the police.
