Nigeria's central north Plateau State says four people have died from a recent cholera outbreak, which has sickened more than 100 people.

The state epidemiologist in charge of preventive health service in the Ministry of Health, Raymond Juliet, told Xinhua on Thursday that tests had confirmed the outbreak of the disease.

The health official added that more than 100 persons were been treated of the disease at various hospitals within the state, adding that the government had dispatched medical staff to the affected areas with drugs to control the situation and prevent the spread of the disease.

A hospital source said that suspected cholera symptoms had last week claimed over lives 13 lives in different locations in Bass Local Government Area of the state.

Cholera is an acute intestinal infection that causes severe vomiting and diarrhea, which can lead to serious dehydration and prove fatal if not properly treated.
