Kolo Roger has been appointed Madagascar's new prime minister, the presidency's general secretary announced on Friday.

President Hery Rajaonarimampianina said doctor Kolo Roger's appointment was proposed by 93 parliament members out of 151 in the parliament.

"I hope that the parliament members supporting the former transitional president Andry Rajoelina will support the prime minister even they did not proposed him," said the president.

Rajaonarimampianina said Roger's appointment was made in accordance with the constitution, which stipulates that "the prime minister will be appointed by president of republic among a list proposed by a political party or a group of political party having the majority in the parliament."

"Kolo Roger meets all conditions that I said, including the stability of power, national reconciliation and the interest of the nation," said Rajaonarimampianina.

The new government should be created next week, said the president.

The presidency's general secretary Ralala Roger said in a decree appointing Kolo Roger that all ministers shall continue working until the creation of the new government.

According to his official website, Kolo Roger, 71, is a doctor. He was barred from being a qualified candidate in the presidential election by Madagascar's special electoral court in August 2013 because of failure to comply with an electoral code requiring local residence.

Denied by Madagascar's special electoral court, Kolo Roger proposed that Hery Rajaonarimampianina replaced him in the presidential race. The later was elected Madagascar's president and took office on Jan. 25, 2014.
