Today, the concept of a modern artist is no longer limited to painters or sculptors anymore; producers and directors also count among their number.
On Thursday, Cui Xiuwen's latest performance art show, Destiny of A Life Time, gave a single day performance at the Today Art Museum. Including a modern dance show, Indian yoga performance, video interviews and a silent drama, the one-hour show tagged as a "play-experience and creation" performance was more like an evening gala for audiences than a static art show.
For Cui, the audience becomes a part of her project as they stand around the stage and actors walk through the crowd. Starting in total darkness as the sound of a heartbeat is heard in the background, the artist invites the audience to join her on a spiritual trip.
Born in Harbin, Heilongjiang Province, Cui studied at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts in the 1990s. The first Chinese female artist to present her work at Tate Britain in London, she plans to hold a five-month solo exhibition in Musée Maillol in Paris at the end of 2014.
