Gloucester director of rugby Nigel Davies has left the English Premiership side with immediate effect, the club announced Monday.

Former Wales center Davies left after a disappointing regular season where Gloucester could only finish ninth in the 12-strong Premiership.

One of the English rugby union's traditional powerhouses, Gloucester have struggled to make much of an impression in either domestic or European rugby since Davies arrived from Welsh side Llanelli Scarlets in June 2012.
