Police apologize for detaining angry netizen
Police in Yanzhou, Shandong Province apologized for detaining a man for five days over an Internet post about parking tickets on Wednesday following netizens' outcry over abuse of power.
Yangzhou police posted a statement Tuesday on their official Sina Weibo account, saying that charges against the man have been dropped and the officers in question will be held accountable.
Surnamed Cao, the man served five days detention for insulting an officer and offensive conduct after he posted unsavory comments online directed at local traffic police.
Before detaining Cao, police responded saying that those who make such casual comments online and break the law will "definitely be punished."
The post was forwarded hundreds of times before it was deleted from the account.
Net users questioned the legal basis of the punishment and accused the police of holding a personal grudge against the ticketed Cao.
Opinions remain divided over the police response.
While some praised the authorities for admitting to a mistake, others said that the decision to first detain the man without proper evidence reveals a lack of respect for due process of law.
