China's 17-year-old swimmer Shen Duo clocked 53.84 seconds to win the women's 100m freestyle at the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games on Tuesday.
Her time was also the world 13th fastest time of the year. Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong, China was second in 54.61 and Qiu Yuhan of China third in 54.66.
"I didn't expect to win," said Shen, who swam in Lane 1. "I was the last in the semis."
Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania, Olympic and world champion of the women's 100m breaststroke, came fifth in 55.17.
"It's my first time competing with Ruta," said Shen. "She congratulated me after the race like I did in the world championships last year when she took two gold medals in breast."
The hosts claimed another swimming gold earlier the day as the 15-year-old Li Zhuhao won the men's 100m butterfly.
