Government employees and students in Beijing will enjoy a six-day holiday as the city hosts this year's Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders' summit, authorities said on Thursday.
According to a notice issued by the Beijing government, government bodies, schools and public institutions in Beijing will have six days off from November 7 to 12. Beijing will hold the 22nd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting on November 10 and 11. A similar holiday schedule was issued in 2001 in Shanghai as it hosted the 9th APEC meeting.
Traffic controls and security inspections will also be implemented near the China National Convention Center in Chaoyang district and centers at Yanqi Lake in Huairou district, where related meetings will be held.
Vehicles with odd and even license plates numbers are required to use the roads on alternate days from November 3 to 12 to mitigate traffic jams during the summit. It is estimated that personal vehicle usage will drop by 35 percent during that time. Transportation authorities will put 400 more buses on the road to meet the needs of the extra 3 million trips predicted to take place via public transportation on a daily basis.
