China's police chief on Monday urged tight security checks to prevent terrorist attacks during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meetings.

China's minister of Public Security Guo Shengkun asked police to tightened up on patrols and ensure the "absolute safety" of leaders and senior officials to the meetings.

Volunteers should be mobilized to join street patrols, said Guo.

He also pledged to minimize the influence on the public by informing them of traffic controls in advance.

Beijing police have been engaged in eight weeks of inspections and preparatory work to guarantee security for the meetings. Measures include management of hazardous articles, anti-terror training and publicity.
