A woman in Wuhan, Hubei Province aborted her second child in order to appease her teenage daughter after she protested her mother's pregnancy by threatening suicide, media reported Sunday.
The 44-year-old mother surnamed Xiao terminated her nearly 14-week pregnancy at the city's Hankou Hospital on Thursday after she found self-inflicted cuts on the wrist of her 13-year-old daughter Wenwen (pseudonym).
"She is our spoiled princess and has been willful since an early age," said Xiao. "After finding out I was pregnant, she threatened to jump off the building," the mother added.
Xiao said tensions began when she and her husband announced they would have a second child after the recently relaxed family-planning policy.
Wenwen first acted out against her unborn sibling by dropping out of school, running away from home and a "previous suicide attempt."
Although reports fail to explain the reason behind Wenwen's extreme protests, a doctor close to the incident speculated that sibling jealousy is to blame.
"It is usual for an only child to reject having a sibling, as most of them were accustomed to being the center of their family," said Hu Hongtao, a doctor at the hospital.
"Parents should better communicate with their children and express their love for them will remain the same even though they have siblings," said Hu.
