Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti on Wednesday designated Acting Prime Minister Iurie Leanca to form a new government.

The president signed a decree on nominating Leanca as candidate for the office of prime minister, according to a release of the presidential press service reaching here from Chisinau, capital of Moldova.

The prime minister-designate has at most 15 days to draw up a governing program and pick his ministers before seeking a confidence vote in Parliament.

Timofti on Tuesday held consultations with the parliamentary groups in a move to designate a candidate for premiership. Only the Liberal Democratic Party put forward Iurie Leanca for premiership, while the other four factions didn't field candidates.

The Liberal Democratic Party and the Democratic Party last Friday signed an agreement to form a minority coalition government, as they could not reach agreement after more than 50 days of negotiations with the Liberal Party on the formation of a three-party majority cabinet.

Leanca, previously foreign minister, took over as head of the pro-western coalition in spring 2013. The government resigned on December 10, after the parliamentary elections were validated, following a formal procedure. Until the new cabinet takes the oath, the caretaker government will exercise only public affairs.
