Two-child policy needed, says CPPCC member
A political advisor in North China is advocating that China bring an end to its one-child policy and instead require parents to have two children, local media reported Thursday.
Mei Zhiqiang, a Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) member in Shanxi Province, argued that more than 30 years of China's one-child policy has resulted in a serious imbalance in population, and could have unimaginable consequences.
Mei stressed that population adjustment policy is of utmost importance and the one-child policy should be replaced in both rural and urban areas.
Authorities should create more incentives to encourage young parents to have two children, Mei said.
However, most netizens were not on board with the proposal, arguing that authorities have no right to force parents to give birth to two children and meddle in their family choices.
Some supported the two-child policy with reservation.
"Although I want to have two babies, I am afraid that we can't bear the cost."
