About 74 Taliban militants have been killed as security forces carried out cleanup operations in different provinces within the last 24 hours, said the Afghan Interior Ministry on Tuesday.
"The operations were conducted in Nangarhar, Parwan, Baghlan, Takhar, Kunduz, Badakhshan, Sari Pul, Jawzjan, Balkh, Kandahar, Zabul, Uruzgan, Logar, Ghazni, Paktia, Herat, Farah and Helmand provinces. As a result 74 armed Taliban members were killed, 49 wounded and 11 others were arrested," the ministry said in a statement.
The security forces also recovered and defused 21 landmines recently planted by the militants in Paktika and Uruzgan provinces.
"The Taliban suffered the heaviest casualties in Kandahar, Uruzgan, Farah and Helmand provinces," the statement noted.
The statement did not disclose if there were any casualties on the side of security forces.
Afghan security forces have assumed the full security charges from NATO and US forces after the NATO-led troops switched from combat to support role since January 1 this year.
