Ji Jianye, former mayor of Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, was sentenced to 15 years in jail and had 2 million yuan ($322,815) of his personal assets confiscated for accepting bribes, China News Service reported Tuesday.

The intermediate court of Yantai, Shandong Province said that various pieces of evidence showed that Ji took bribes amounting to 11.32 million yuan between late 1999 and the second half of 2012.

According to prosecutors, Ji helped different companies and individuals with project bids, development and finding employment while working in the Jiangsu cities of Suzhou, Kunshan, Yangzhou and Nanjing and took bribes in different forms including cash and cars.

During the trial, Ji confessed to all the charges brought against him, saying that he failed the Party and government by becoming corrupt and asked for light punishment. Ji's lawyer pled for leniency because Ji had voluntarily confessed and returned all of the bribe money he was paid.

Ji was probed by the Communist Party of China's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection in January 2014 and was charged one month later.

Yang Weize, former Nanjing Party chief, was also put under investigation on January 4, making Nanjing the first city in which both the mayor and the Party chief were investigated for corruption.
