Indian air force put on high alert after quake hit Nepal, parts of India

Indian air force has been put on high alert for possible rescue operation following the massive earthquake which hit Nepal and northern and eastern India Saturday, said official sources.

Meanwhile, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke in emergency to the chief ministers of various states and convened a high-level meeting to take stock of the situation.

At least 11 people have been killed in India in the quake, which caused panic in many parts of the country, said local media.

Modi spoke to chief ministers of Bihar, Sikkim, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, all affected by the quake.

"We are in the process of finding more information and are working to reach out to those affected, both at home & in Nepal," Modi tweeted immediately after the 7.9-magnitude quake whose epicenter was in Nepal.

The prime minister has convened a high-level meeting with Ministers as well as top officials in the wake of the situation arising due to the earthquake.

The strong quake, with at least 14 after shocks, shook Nepal and several parts of India, including the national capital.
