US-Japan defense guidelines danger to Asia

Since the US and Japan unveiled their new defense guidelines on Monday, the pernicious fallout has been revealing. The new pact for their bilateral defense cooperation affirmed the inclusion of the controversial Diaoyu Islands in their security alliance system, and extended the tentacles of Japanese forces to "the globe." The current Asia-Pacific geopolitical structure is on the verge of destruction.

The new guidelines have struck a threatening pose toward China, which is the strongest driver for East Asia's development. They should know that their aggression has sent a dangerous signal to regional stability.

Since the Cold War's end, the US-Japan alliance has never been so military-oriented as now. They no longer make efforts to hide their intention of containing China's rise. This antagonistic trajectory has dealt another blow to the already vulnerable China-US and China-Japan relations.

When China is brandishing the flag of peace and development, the US and Japan are digging trenches around East Asia, a move which they have hypocritically declared is not directed at any third party. Washington and Tokyo shouldn't expect China will just sit still.

Washington knows clearly that Japan is stepping back in historical issues and leaning to the right in internal politics. Relaxing the restraints on the Japanese military forces will trigger enormous controversies in Japan's neighborhood.

However, Washington's appeasement of Japan is still beyond our speculation. It seems that messing up Asia and stirring up China-Japan confrontation has become a more important commitment to the US.

China's frictions with its neighbors have been complicated due to Washington's involvement. The US "pivot to Asia" strategy brings warships and cannonballs into Asia instead of funds and investments.

Around the Diaoyu Islands, even under the US-Japan alliance, Washington had better think twice before it wields a baton and bosses around.

Asia's peace is essential to China's development. That is why Beijing tries every effort to maintain a stable regional environment.

However, in order to realize their major goal of disrupting China's development, Washington and Tokyo do not value regional stability as much as China.

But it appears that both Washington and Tokyo have underestimated the side effects of sacrificing Asia's peace and stability. Their tricks will only result in sowing the wind and reaping the whirlwind.

The US showing off muscles via allies is a disguise of its relative decline in competitiveness. However, facts have proven its efforts futile. For example, many US allies turned their backs soon after they realized what the China-backed Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank could do for them.

The US and Japan are raising high risks in the West Pacific, and any consequences will be on them. Their disguise as "peacekeepers" of Asia will be seen through.
