The Indian Home Ministry said on Tuesday that two quakes hit India with their epicenters in Nepal and Afghanistan respectively.

Strong tremors that last more than a minute were felt in the entire northern India. No damages, however, were immediately reported, according to officials.

The quakes felt in Delhi and National Capital Region were relatively less in intensity, but were strong enough to shake the buildings, especially the high-rise structures, said police.

People ran out of the houses and buildings and Delhi Metro train services were temporarily halted.

The residents of other Indian cities in the northern state Uttar Pradesh, eastern states of Bihar and West Bengal, also rushed outdoors when the quake occurred.

In Nepal, the first quake struck near the base camp for Mount Everest and was measured at a shallow depth of about 10 km. It was followed by a second less strong one centered near Kathmandu, according to Indian meteorological department.

An earthquake of 6.9 magnitude also struck Afghanistan.
