Super League clubs voted to introduce a marquee player rule for 2016 during the competition's annual meeting in Manchester on Wednesday.
The proposal, initially put forward by Salford Chairman Marwan Koukash, had been rejected three times in the past two years. It will allow wealthier clubs to sign a big-name player whose annual salary will be at least partially exempt from the current 1.85 million pound ($2.83 million) cap.
Wakefield, Castleford, Hull and Huddersfield were all thought to have voted against the proposal, but it was reportedly passed with an 8-4 majority.
