A woman in Zhanjiang, Guangdong Province had a rough first day of motherhood after she unknowingly gave birth on the back of a motorbike  and left the baby behind on the road as she head for the hospital.

The baby, now in stable condition, was found three kilometers away from the hospital and surrounded by three men blocking traffic, local media reported on Wednesday

The woman, surnamed Qi, arrived at Chenguang Nongchang Hospital with her husband Li on a motorcycle and told medical staff she was in labor. Doctors quickly noticed blood dripping down her legs along with a broken umbilical cord and placenta, but no baby.

Li and the doctors rushed to retrace their route to the hospital to find three men standing around the newborn - in the middle of traffic.

Besides some minor bruises, the baby was safe and sound.

"Thank goodness for our doctors and the good drivers that helped me bring home my child," Li said.
