With his focus on returning to Berlin marathon, Kenya' s Geoffrey Mutai will try to win Sunday' s 10km road race in Boston as part of his preparations for the fall marathon season.Mutai left for Boston expectant of a win as he competes in the fifth BAA 10km which will take place on Sunday. He will have to contend with a determined fight from compatriot and former champion of the event Stephen Sambu.
"I just want to test and see how my body reacts to competition again after I got injured in London marathon in April," said Mutai before his departure on Friday. "I have to be at my best for the September marathon in Berlin or Chicago."
Both Mutai and Sambu have won this race twice, and Mutai is the course record holder with 27:19.
Mutai could be carrying some fatigue after competing recently at the Zwolle half marathon and Sambu did beat him in their last 10 km encounter.
The women' s race pits marathon aces Caroline Kilel and World Marathon champion Edna Kiplagat against Mary Wacera and Diane Nukuri.
Kiplagat, who is keen to win her third gold at the World Championships in Beijing in August, will be making her final competitive race before returning home to focus on training for the World Championships.
The men' s and women' s winners will receive 10,000 US dollars. The course record bonus is 7,500 dollars.
