Man charged with attempted murder over London Tube stabbing

The man who stabbed commuters at a subway station in east London was charged with the attempted murder, Britain's Metropolitan Police said Monday.

Muhaydin Mire, 29, wielded a knife and reportedly shouted "this is for Syria" before attacking commuters at Leytonstone Underground Station in east London on Saturday evening.

The Metropolitan Police said it had treated the attack as a "terrorist incident."

"Muhaydin Mire, 29 (28.12.1985) of Sansom Road, E11 appears in custody at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Monday, 07 December charged with the attempted murder of a 56-year-old man," the Metropolitan Police announced in a statement.

Police were called at 7:06 p.m. on Saturday to reports of a number of people stabbed at the station. The suspect was also reportedly threatening other people with a knife.

Officers discharged Tasers at the attacker who was then restrained and arrested for attempted murder at 7:14 p.m..

Police have urged witnesses who filmed the attack to come forward and share the video footages with investigators.
