Two traveling theater companies from North Korea arrived in Northeast China's Liaoning Province on Wednesday for a series of performances in China.

The two troupes, the State Merited Chorus and the Moranbong Band, will perform in the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing from Sunday to Monday.

The visit will contribute to "deepening friendship" and "boosting cultural and artistic exchanges between the two countries," the Korean Central News Agency reported.

"North Korea is a close neighbor of China. We would like to continue with our friendly cooperation with North Korea as it serves the interests of the two countries and contributes to peace and stability in the region," Hua Chunying, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told a daily briefing on Wednesday in Beijing.

"We always believe that state-to-state exchanges and cooperation in various forms will help increase mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples," she said.

She added that the ministry has no information about their itinerary.

The chorus is well-known for its revolutionary songs, while the band is  popular in North Korea.
