China's largest online shopping platform Taobao sold an island in the Maldives for 5.76 million yuan ($892,000) on Saturday, the country's recently created "Double 12" shopping festival, which features deep discounts to online buyers each December 12.

"When you did not get up at 9 am this morning, some rich guy spent nearly 6 million yuan to buy an island in the Maldives at an auction. Of course, even if you got up, you may not be able to afford to buy it," Taobao said on its official website on Saturday.

Taobao did not reveal the identity of the buyer or the island's name.

It was not the first time that Taobao sold an island. In May, islands in Fiji, Canada and Greece were auctioned off at prices of 5 million yuan, 1.7 million yuan and 4.8 million yuan, news site gucheng.com reported.

This may sound like a lot of money, but many modest apartments in central Beijing sell for much higher amounts.
