An Anhui Province woman was detained after police say she called to complain that a large portion of the counterfeit bills she bought were blank, media reported on Thursday.

Following up the call, Fuyang police took Xiao Ling (pseudonym) into custody for possession of counterfeit money on December 16.

Xiao told officers she was conned out of 50,000 yuan ($7,720) in the exchange and the seller would no longer pick up his phone.

Officers say Xiao was trying to buy counterfeit bills with a face value of 300,000 yuan, read the report, but when she discovered many of the notes where blank instead called police demanding compensation.

Xiao said she had first contacted the seller, surnamed Zhao, online and arranged a place to meet.

Xiao said she quickly grabbed the money and didn't examine it thoroughly because she feared they were being watched.

Police are investigating the case and Zhao has not yet been identified.
