No casualties have been reported so far after a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck northwest China's Xinjiang on Thursday morning, according to the local earthquake administration.
Cracks were found on some old houses and walls after the quake jolted Luntai County in the Bayingol Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture at 5:18 a.m. No losses were reported at nearby coal mines, reservoirs or oil fields.
Stones fell from nearby mountains, but no one was hurt. The eight coal mines around the epicenter have currently halted operations.
The area within 50 km of the epicenter has endured 26 earthquakes with magnitude of more than 5.0 since 1900. In 2012, a 5.4-magnitude quake hit the region.
