Blind man busted for driving motorcycle
A blind man in East China's Jiangxi Province sparked concerns among locals after a video clip of him driving a motorcycle as his wife gave directions went viral, media reported.
Footage shows the daring rider, surnamed Rao, at the handlebars with his wife seated behind him on Highway 320 in Yichun, East China's Jiangxi Province, news site myzaker.com reported on Monday.
Rao managed a ride from central Yichun to a mountain village some 30 kilometers away, according to the report.
Local traffic police started an investigation after the video triggered public concerns over safety and netizens identified the blind rider.
Police found that Rao worked in Yichun as a masseur and his mother lived in the remote village.
Rao said that he sometimes drove himself to visit his mother in order to save the 40 yuan ($6.1) round-trip bus fare.
Rao said he would rely on his sense of hearing to perceive the road conditions, adding he would never ride without the company of his wife.
Rao said he had been able to hide his handicap from police for years by wearing sunglasses.
Police said they persuaded Rao to give up his motorcycling and are helping him obtain a bus pass.
