Myanmar's Kachin State Chief Minister Khet Aung Friday stressed the need for the governments of Myanmar and China to explore the best way of resolving the long-suspended Myitsone Dam project issue.
Meeting with Chinese delegation led by Ambassador Hong Liang in Kachin state's capital Myitgyina, Khet Aung said he does not want to see the Myitsone project destroy the two countries' friendship.
He told the press that the issue would be dealt with in accordance with the decision of the new government and the will of the people.
On his part, Ambassador Hong Liang said that Kachin state plays an important role in China-Myanmar relation, as there is a long boundary between China's Yunnan province and Myanmar's Kachin state.
The Chinese delegation made donation to an orphanage in Myitgyina with food and necessities.
The Myitsone hydropower project, jointly invested by China and Myanmar, is estimated to yield 29,400 million kilowatt-hours a year on completion that was earlier scheduled by 2019, with an installed capacity of 6,000 megawatts (mw). The construction started in December 2009 but was suspended in 2011.
The Myitsone hydro power plant lies on the Ayeyawaddy River near Tanphe village, about 7 kilometers downstream of the confluence in Myanmar's northernmost Kachin state.
