The upcoming opening of the Shanghai Disneyland theme park and resort on June 16 has not only stirred excitement among Disney fans, but also inspired a number of ambitious scams. In the run-up to the opening, a fake Disney hotel website emerged online to lure unsuspecting tourists. The site, which had used the Chinese characters for "Disney" and other registered trademarks without authorization, prompted customers for their personal information such as ID, phone and credit card numbers. At one point, the website was listed among the top search results on Baidu before being taken offline, media reported. This is not the first time Disney Shanghai's opening has triggered dubious advertising. In 2015, five hotels were fined by city authorities for branding themselves as "official" Disney hotels, media reported.
