Greek police arrested more than 100 Taiwan people on Thursday on suspicion of being members of a telecom fraud gang.
Some 120 Taiwan residents and three or four Greeks were arrested for the crime of telecom fraud in Greece, and Taiwan "foreign affairs department" officials announced that they will try to extradite the suspects back to the island for trial, the Taiwan-based news website udn.com reported Sunday.
According to the department, the representatives of Taiwan in Greece have liaised with Greek police over the case and the steps that will now be taken by both sides.
A special team has been set up by Taiwan officials to keep an eye on the case and to trace the identities of the suspects, udn.com reported.
Greek police said the case is still under investigation and the suspects are being detained at police headquarters.
In recent years, Taiwan residents have organized telecom fraud groups in Southeast Asia, Africa and Oceania and defrauded Chinese-speakers in the mainland and Taiwan, according to the mainland's
Ministry of Public Security, China Central Television reported.
An annual average of more than 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) in illicit profits have been made by Taiwan fraudsters from the mainland, An Fengshan, a spokesperson of the Taiwan Affairs Office of China's State Council, previously told a press conference.
