Virginia Tharsher of the United States claimed the first gold medal of the Rio Olympic Games when she won the women's 10m air rifle event here on Saturday.

Tharsher scored 208 points in the 20-shot final, edging 2004 Olympic champion Du Li of China into second place on 207 points.

Yi Siling, also from China, took the bronze medal.
