No.3: Country midwife

In the past, many pregnant Chinese women had a long tradition of having midwives help them deliver a baby at home due to poor health care facilities. These midwives were not what we know as professional nurses in hospitals today. These midwives did not have any obstetric training, but conducted the delivery based on their own experiences. Therefore, they were not always dependable. Their malpractices had a direct correlation with the relatively high mortality rate of pregnant Chinese women.
