No. 4: bamboo basket weaver
Bamboo baskets used to be a very important family necessity. In the 1950s and 1960s, many families in villages in south China made their livelihoods on basket weaving. The weaving skill was passed on from generation to generation. But it is now on the verge of extinction as young people leave rural areas for coastal cities to seek opportunities against the drop of reform and opening up. Those who stay are older basket makers, continuing to weave to help out with family expenses.
