No. 5: Sugar figure maker
Sugar figure makers used to go from street to street with shoulder poles, carrying a cupboard on each side. One of the cupboards held charcoal and was the maker’s seat, while the other was a charcoal stove with a spoon full of maltose in the center. The maker would spoon out a little maltose and nip the soft maltose. Then he would plunge a wheat straw into it, blowing gently while rubbing it into a creature, usually animals.
