According to the Wall Street Journal, BYD intends to sell the electric car e6 in the US by the end of 2010.
In an interview Monday, BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu said the company is still studying the US market to determine the price and the number of models that should be imported and through what kind of distribution network.
"There are lots of things we need to sort through," Wang said. "In the beginning, we don't think it will be a huge quantity."
BYD expects to sell the e6 for city use to the government, utility companies or fleets of taxis in China where the model will first go on sale. Wang said the company expects the same strategy could be applied to the US.
BYD is backed by MidAmerican Energy Holding Co., a unit of Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. that paid about $230 million for a 9.9 percent stake in BYD.
Wang said Monday that it's possible for the automaker to seek partners in the US to sell its vehicles.
