A series of new works, including both paintings and installations, by Shanghainese artist Qiu Jie is currently on display at the Shanghai Gallery of Art in Three on the Bund till 31 March. Although anyone can walk around and interact with the installations one volunteer got a special opportunity to interact with the artist yesterday, acting as a model for a painting.
“The interactive character of this show is planned to break people’s common impression of contemporary art, which is commonly perceived as hard to comprehend,” said Jessie Xie, one of the organizers from Shanghai Gallery of Art.
Born in 1961, Qiu Jie has become one of a handful of world renowned modern artists born in Shanghai. He began his career as a political propaganda painter before moving to Switzerland 20 years ago. There he developed a pop political style to depict his vision of the world, creating a realism built up of storyboards and cinematographic shots. His fine pencil strokes evoke memories of his native China – landscapes, portraits, historical or anecdotal scenes. His recent drawings and paintings are occasionally extended into the gallery space through accompanying theatrical installations.
Qie’s artworks have been exhibited in many famous art museums and galleries around the world within the past decade, including the Saatchi Gallery in London, the Red Mansion Foundation also in London, the Arario Gallery in Korea, the Hanart TZ Gallery in Hong Kong, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Switzerland, the Shanghai Art Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Shanghai.
