"In her stories, many of her women are trapped by conservative tradition. They are struggling and fighting against all of these things in order to escape the boundaries of society."

However, Lai said that, from her point of view, Chang's characters echoed her own hopes and dreams.

In her own life, Chang suffered in her first marriage with Hu Lancheng, only to get embroiled in another rocky marriage with American screenwriter, Ferdinand Reyher.

Along with the famous stories, the music used in this performance is worthy of note. Lai combined Western-style music into traditional Chinese elements, such as music from northeast China, the erhu and insect noises.

"I want to create a kind of chaos similar to a state of schizophrenia," she said.

Lai has won many awards in Hong Kong and abroad. The most outstanding of her achievements is the Order of the British Empire, which she received from the Queen in 1995.

She has worked at the CCDC since 1985 and is in the avant-garde of Hong Kong modern dance.

The CCDC has performed 66 international tours in over 30 major cities around the globe.
