But Meng did not give up his usual tricks for the sake of a classical interpretation. He added his sense of humor into the role of Sancho, Quixote's squire, played by Liu Xiaoye, an actor from the NTCC.
Slang mixed Chinese dialects from various regions so they pop out of Sancho's mouth one after another. But the constant puns really do not take away from the performance.
According to Meng, the black and white animation on the stage at the very beginning will give audiences a sense of traveling back 400 years, foreshadowing the absurdity and the solemnity of the whole show.
Spanish guitar and music from the Middle Ages also run throughout the show. "Besame Mucho," a famous Spanish piece, is sung by the actors themselves, accompanied by a comic and clumsy flamenco dance.
The play will be performed in Chinese with Spanish subtitles.
